Looks like Lady GaGa is taking a backseat in album sales charts this year, not like she would have stood a chance with the amount of copies sold by Adele's 21 anyway.

Adele's album '21' has become the first album to sell more than five
million copies in a year in the US since 2004, Reporting agency Reuters claims.

The second album from the London songstress sold 5.6 million copies in America alone in 2011. The last artist to sell over five million copies of an album in a year was Usher with is 2004 'Confessions' album.

Nielsen Soundscan, who compiled the data also suggested that overall music sales were up three per cent from last year, while digital sales are expected to have increased by 10 per cent.

The album was definitely deemed as one of the popular albums of 2011. Mostly because it told the story of Adele's life, and described her feelings, especially in the relationship department.
Just last week, Adele revealed that she had begun "basic vocal training" following her throat surgery this year.
The singer had vocal chord microsurgery in order to stop recurrent
bleeding from a benign polyp, and her condition also forced to cancel all of her remaining live dates of 2011.

Adele recently warned her fans not to expect a follow-up to her chart- topping album '21' in the near future.

The singer said she is definitely taking a break before she pens songs for her next record and it is unlikely to see the light for at least two or three years.

Congratulations on a job well done Adele.
